Spring Forward and Stay Motivated

As I sit here and write this I had to carefully consider what I would say becuase there has been so many things that have motivated me to keep my weight off.

I would say there are three things that allow me to stay motivated.

First, last winter I totally cleaned out my fat clothes and now only have a size 10 or size 8 in my closet.I still need large tops due to the fact that despite my best efforts my bustline still needs some serious toning.I have thought about breast reduction but am not too crazy about the pain involved in going through with it.

Second,I have a great group of people whose energy and support makes it so easy to keep motivated. In addition my group has taught me a lesson in humility and how to handle situations in a more diplomatic manner.

Last but not least I have gotten so used to a healthier way of eating that I don't know what I ever did before I started this journey.I feel better, have more energy and more mental focus.Keeping track of appointments, deadlines and so on has become easier as well.

To anyone who has ever had doubts of the validity of cleaning out ones environment and eliminating sabatours to aide in successful weight loss I can not stress how important it is.

~Kay~poses with one of her fitness mentors Tony Little at Lifefest~

Tony and Sarah, Duchess of York

Welcome to another month and another newsletter! The WLC is going into month # 7 and we have so many exciting happenings going on all over the place. As you can see in my above photo, i am quite thrilled to have personally met one of my all time mentors, Tony Little, who is dubbed "America's Personal Trainer" and currently famed for his Gazelle fitness equipment.
I had a few minutes of time to speak to Tony Little about my personal goals, thanking him for being such an inspiring mentor, and he was so supportive of my efforts thus far. To date, I have personally lost 30 lbs and have 50 to go.
We met at an event called "Lifefest". We went there to get more ideas for our WLC group. We had the opportunity to listen to Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York and WW spokesperson. Although she was not there to promote weight watchers, her theme for the evening was "In Search of Sarah", a compelling, heartwarming story of her own journey in weight loss and the sabatoges she overcame to reach her current goal.
Sarah, blamed herself for her parents divorce as a child because she had broken a promise to her mother, and cut off her long hair. When she came home that day, her mother was gone. For years, she blamed herself and food became her best friend.
Along the way, she had some major setbacks, which only helped to increase her desire to eat emotionally, such as being dubbed the "duchess of pork". Later, she was confronted with talking to the same man that posed this phrase and she found out, after beating herself up over this one phrase and sabatoging herself, that this reporter, never meant anything bad by it at all and it had not been meant to be hurtful. He actually felt bad that it had been used at all.
She faced many other obstacles and stresses in life as well. Much of the time, she turned to food for comfort.
Her message to us was much the same message that DrPhil leaves us with. Overcome your negative thinking, Surround yourself with support, look at food as something other than a friend, make wise choices because everything is a choice, and communicate, share and be open about how your feeling in the moment, rather than holding it in and stuffing with food.
The best thing is we get this all with great support from our groups. Get involved! Participate, share, vent. We all have what it takes to lose the weight for good. We just need to require more from ourself everyday. One day, your story of success may speak to others and who knows, we may just kick this obesity/overweight epidemic in the end! Best of luck to you all!!

~Kay

Never a missed opportunity

What do you see in this picture? These are my friends and daughter in the first two rows. What do I see? That I am missing in the picture missing.

Last summer my friend and her boyfriend came for a visit from Maine to California. Their goal of their trip was to go to as many "Great America" theme parks as they could. We have one near us and made a day of it.

Standing in line for an hour I internally accessed if I was going to fit on the ride or not (as I have been kicked off before). I watch how the people were in, looked at the seats, figured how I could position myself so I could fit, I thought I had it figured out.

We were NEXT it was so exciting, the guys and my daughter wanted to be in front, I was to ride with my girlfriend behind them. The moment I tried to get on the ride I knew it was going to be impossible. I moved off the train and my boyfriend started to get off too, I told him to go with my daughter, to have fun. The employee told me I had to step off the platform, I was thankful for that as I did not want them to see the tears.

Why am I not in that photo? Because I was 330 lbs. There is no other reason, my health is good, my want to ride was there. There was only one reason why I was missing.

My goal by September this year is to lose 75 lbs before my 40th birthday and to celebrate, I will be on that ride beside my daughter! I will not be missing anymore.

A Day At Lifefest

~by Charlene P.

Okay everyone here it is. Fresh off the press and straight from the horses mouth! I know Kay is writing about the Duchess and why she was in Toronto, but I'm so excited that I just have to brag a little!!
Kay, myself and my husband went to the Life Fest Show in Toronto, at the Toronto Convention Centre. After meeting Debbie Travis and Tony Little, (I'll let Kay tell you all about that one!) which was exciting as well, we saw and listened to the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. Me and my husband had a command audience with the Duchess!! We were asked to come up on stage to meet her, because my husband asked how he could better support me in my weight loss efforts and what he could do if I got depressed because I hit a plateau. I guess she was so taken by his concern, that she asked us to come up on stage with her. I was so nervous, I thought I would faint. We standing up in front of about 4000 people!! I was shaking like a leaf. She is so beautiful and "thin." She started at 232lbs and is now 130lbs. That's 102 lbs that she's lost! Amazing, I didn't even think she was that heavy.
To make short of it, I got weight loss encouragement from the Duchess, got hugged twice by her, my husband got to kiss her hand and he said to her, "you don't marry into royalty, royalty comes from within and my wife has it." She even got him to repeat it, she was so pleased with what he said and then she presented us with a pot of about 3 dozen tulips! It's a day that we won't soon forget!

AN EMOTIONAL EATER

I eat to have comfort; I eat not to stress,
I eat for emotions that I need to supress.
This body well padded, I think, will not feel,
The hellacious hurts that I strive to conceal.

The chips and the candies, I stuff down like rain,
But there's never enough to drown all my pain.
The warmth of my ice cream cakes up my cell,
Where my spirit, my soul, burns in my hell.

Now all of this junk that I've stuffed down my gut,
Has not helped me at all; I'm in a worse rut.
I'm an emotional eater, who is now so obese,
Ruining my health did not lead me to peace.

I ate to have comfort; I ate because I was stressed.
I ate for emotions that I should not have surpressed.
I pray for the comfort, eating only for health,
An emotional eater who has forgiven herself.

The Differences between Butter and Margarine

   BUTTER
Both have the same amount
of calories
Butter is slightly higher
in saturated fats @ 8 grams
compared to 5 grams
Eating butter increases the
absorption of many other
nutrients in other foods,
Butter has many nutritional
benefits
Butter tastes much better
and it can enhance the
flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for
centuries

         MARGARINE
Same amount of calories
Slightly lower in saturated
Eating margarine can increase heart disease
in women by 53% over eating the same amount
of butter according to recent Harvard Medical
study.
Does not taste as good
Margarine has been around for less than 100
years
Very high in trans fatty acids - Triple risk
 of Coronary Heart Disease
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (Bad Kind)
Lowers HDL(Good Kind)
Increases the risk of cancers by to five fold
Lowers quality of breast milk
Decreases Immune Response
Decreases Insulin Response
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being
 PLASTIC
Margarine is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen
has been added changing the molecular structure
of the substance)

TRY THIS YOURSELF
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your
garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days
you will note a couple of things: no flies,
not even those pesky fruit flies will go near
it (that should tell you something)..it does
not rot or smell differently because it has
no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it ,
even those teeny weeny micro-organisms will not
  find a home to grow.

WHY ! BECAUSE IT IS NEARLY PLASTIC!!!!!

WOULD YOU MELT YOUR TUPPERWARE AND SPREAD IT
ON YOUR TOAST?

WHAT WORKS

-

Here are some ideas from the DrPhil-FUN list

for you to try as success boosters:

* Going out with some adult companionship at least once a week.
And talking about what is going on with my weight loss.

* Write in my journal on a daily basis as to how much I work out.
And how much water I drink.

* Every Monday night I weigh myself and measure.

* I work out as soon as I get home.  If I don't do that I wont
work out.

* Planning my menu for a week and then getting my groceries from that list.

* Saying the kitchen is closed after 7.30pm - all the lights go off and
since I have no goodies to munch on and sabotage me, it works well

* I have a few local "buddies" who come and work out with me
during the week which keeps me on track.

* My "versatile menu" approach in large letters on the kitchen cabinet
plus yummy colour photos. This is for the days I did not get a food plan
made in advance. Customize your own or adapt mine which fits the
guidelines for both Dr Phil and Dr Perricone's anti-inflammatory diet
(of "The Perricone Prescription" fame) and has carefully planned
calories, nutrients and serving sizes.
BREKKER: Egg nog and toast: 1 egg, 1 cups green tea (hot), 1/2
teaspoon turmeric, 1 cup skim milk powder, all beaten together. Also 1
teaspoon extra virgin olive oil brushed on a slice of raisin cinnamon
Ezekiel toast served hot. (Cals 480, fat 12g, protein 25g, fiber 3g)
SNACK (do your exercise first): 3/4 cup frozen blueberries microwaved
a minute, with 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil on them, plus 1/2 cup
frozen fat free yogurt. Green tea to drink. (Cals 210, Prot 4g, Fat 5g,
Fiber 4g)
LUNCH: Soup in the wok plus poached egg on toast:
1/2 can of no salt added tomato diced, onion flakes, 1.5 cup green tea,
any favourite spices, herbs, red pepper etc. Heat to boiling. Turn off
heat. Mix and add 1/2 cup skim milk powder, 2 tablespoons rice bran, 1
tablespoon corn starch. Turn on heat and stir till just thickens.
Meantime microwave a pierced-yolk egg with a half teaspoon water in a
microwave poacher (about 25 seconds in a 1000 watt microwave) and serve
with red pepper flakes on Ezekiel toast spread with 1 teaspoon
extra-virgin olive oil. (Cals 460, protein 29g, fiber 9g, fat 5g.)
SNACK: 3 tablespoons nuts or seeds. Green tea.
(Cals 180, Prot 6g, Fat 15g, Fiber 3g)
SUPPER: Vegetable fish chowder in wok/pot:
1/2 can tuna or a fresh half of a tilapia filet in pieces added last or
1/4 can salmon. Frozen spinach, snow peas, mushrooms, green pepper
chopped for 1.5 cups total, 1 to 1.5 cups green tea, green onion or thin
sliced onion or onion flakes. Favourite flavourings such as 1/2 teasp
each ginger, basil, italian herbs; 2 teasp lemon juice, plus garlic and
redpepper flakes to taste. Start with a teaspoon olive oil and onion,
add tea and the rest and heat all. Then add 4 tablespoon of fat free
cream cheese and mix in well and serve.
(Cals 340, Prot 35g, fiber 5g, fat 10g)

NOTES: Every meal has extra-virgin olive oil to help you burn fat, or
similar oil from nuts or salmon. Every meal has high antioxidants
(turmeric, spinach, tomato, blueberries) to keep your cells from getting
inflamed. There is no carbohydrate after lunch so you do not crave more.
There is no added salt, feel free to use lite salt; very low saturated
fat (the egg). Green tea is antioxidant and lowers cortisol so you can
lose weight unlike coffee that raises it.

Success to you all from DrPhil-FUN group!!!
